Inspiration
I have seen many of my friends enter into stock positions that carry a greater risk then they realize due to the complex and opaque interplay between the companies and the industry.
What it does
"How exposed am I?" shows users how a change in one of their positions, or an industry can have an outsized effect on their portfolio as a whole. It allows users to explore how they modify their portfolio in order to make it more resistant to outsized downturns.
How we built it
This is done through a custom designed metric that weighs a variety of factors.
Challenges we ran into
This was the first time I made anything remotely complicated in turns of frontend development. The UI ate up a lot more of my time and sanity than I had hoped for. Additionally, the API I utilized has certain limitations about bonds and industry averages.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
This project is 100% in a workable state. I would like to add a number of features for more niche types of investments, but it can be used by 90% of retail investors as is.
What we learned
JavaScript callbacks are both a blessing and an evil curse. All jokes aside, I learned how to create an UI, and how to create an effective database in JavaScript.
What's next for How Exposed am I?
I plan on switching out the API in order to add support for bonds, saving accounts, and options. I hope to get it hosted on a public server as well, as I ran out of time during the hackathon itself.
