🧠 Inspiration

With Ontario and the rest of the world beginning to reopen offices, there is a huge shift from remote to hybrid work. We recognize that this is a comprehensive process. Companies must adhere to covid protocols, coordinate which employees come into the office, and enforce capacities for office spaces and meeting rooms.

🐤 What is it?

✨ hy-bird. ✨ is a mobile app that eases the transition from working at home into the office. hy-bird. allows you to complete daily covid check-ins, book desks and meeting rooms, and more! Users are given a questionnaire to fill out to determine the best days for them to come into the office.

🧑‍💻 How we built it?

At first, we had a quick brainstorming session of the main functionalities and features of our app. From there we split into 2 groups, design and development.

On the development side, we decided to create the application using android studio. Shushawn and Josh worked together to create a functional login and dashboard. Josh worked on integrating the OpenWeather API to display the 5-day forecast while Shushawn created an algorithm that assigns a score to each day – higher score indicating better day to go to office.

On the design side, we began by sketching and wireframing different flows of the app on Figma. We knew we wanted to implement dark mode, thus built a compatible design system including color, typography, and iconography. Mehak worked on the login page, onboarding process, dashboard and calendar, while Anna worked on the desk/meeting room booking and search function.

☄️ Challenges we ran into

Since it was our first time using Android studio, we encountered a lot of challenges throughout the process. On the design side, we encountered issues with the dashboard screen layout, and picking the appropriate colors for overlays and modules that would fit with our dark theme. It was also the first time using Figma for one of the designers and creating smooth interactions proved an obstacle. When creating the algorithm, multiple obstacles were faced. Creating a fully, functional tensorflow model was causing issues and was not always predicting accurate results. Based off that, a numerical weighting system was determined to solve the issue – still allowing for a fair and accurate marking system.

🎉 Accomplishments that we’re proud of

Weather API integration! Onboarding process! Booking desks and meeting rooms feature!

🍼 What we learned

With most of us participating in our first hackathon, we sure learned a lot! We learned how to integrate an OpenWeather API that calls a 5-day weather forecast, displaying the temperature, heat index/apparent temperature, and weather conditions of each day. Explored dark mode interface and different color systems and mechanics that go along with it.

🌏 Whats next for hy-bird.

Build an employer portal to allow easy people management, and customizations. Build out full app on android studio Beta testing with local business (5-15 employees)
