Inspiration

We wanted to improve financial literacy and accessibility by consolidating personal finance data into individualized wealth plans. Financial literacy is a widespread challenge: only 27% of adults feel confident creating an investment plan, and just 47% have an emergency fund. Many young adults perform poorly on financial literacy measures, while women and minority groups—particularly Black and Hispanic households—report lower confidence and greater financial vulnerability. Additionally, less than half of U.S. states mandate high school financial literacy courses, leaving many young adults without a foundational understanding of money management.

What it does

Intrst helps young adults take control of their finances by providing personalized insights, actionable advice, and AI-generated visualizations. Users can see their financial situation in a clear, intuitive way, from emergency funds to long-term investment planning, making complex concepts easier to understand and act on.

How we built it

We built the frontend using React and the backend with Node.js and MongoDB to handle user data securely and efficiently. Our AI layer uses Google Gemini integrated via LangChain, which not only interprets user queries and provides personalized advice but also generates the visualizations that make financial data engaging and understandable.

Challenges we ran into

We faced a few hurdles along the way, including designing a user-friendly UI/UX, setting up agentic AI workflows, and managing database integration and deployment issues. Each challenge taught us more about creating a cohesive, interactive application under time constraints.

Accomplishments we're proud of

By the end of the hackathon, we had a fully functioning application with a clean, attractive design. One of our proudest achievements was the AI-generated visualizations, which transformed raw financial data into intuitive, visually appealing insights that users can act on immediately.

What we learned

We gained hands-on experience integrating agentic AI into a full-stack application, learned the importance of visual communication in finance, and navigated the challenges of rapid prototyping and deployment in a hackathon environment.

What's next for Intrst

Looking ahead, we plan to expand features for goal tracking and automated budgeting, add more personalized AI insights based on user spending behavior, and improve cross-platform accessibility, including mobile support, to make financial literacy even more approachable for young adults.
