Project Details:
- Track: Communication
- Divison: 18-
Our Inspiration:
Whilst our team was getting to know each other, we struck up a conversation about the languages we took in school. We were joking about Google Translate being a godsend when Julian mentioned he took ASL. That got us thinking about ways we could build an ASL Translator and make ASL more accessible.
How it works:
Let's Sign takes recorded words and translates them to a string using AI, from which we convert to finger-spelled ASL.
Languages Used:
We used Python, Javascript, HTML, and CSS to build Let's Sign.
Challenges:
We struggled with staying awake, but we worked together to keep each other up!
Accomplishments:
- Implementation of API and AI to translate speech to text.
- Improved web development skills.
- Learned how to extend frontend functionality to backend API.
What we learned:
We all learned quite a bit about machine learning/AI as well as the utilization of Python, JS, HTML, CSS, as well as APIs to connect the front-end and back-end.
What's next for Let's Sign:
We're going to add more and more complex signs so that our translator is more comprehensive as well as making it more mobile friendly!
