Inspiration

We were inspired by a local restaurant that members of our team really enjoyed but sadly had to close down because they weren't getting many sales, despite having incredible food. We thought that the problem was definitely not the quality of their product, but a bigger issue many small businesses face: awareness. If only more people had known about this amazing restaurant, then maybe they would not have had to shut down.

What it does

This website allows users in a community to post reviews about visiting local businesses. Whether it's posting about a long-time hidden gem of yours, or a new amazing discovery, spreading the word about positive experiences at a small business is essential to the business's success. Not only does this allow other users to find new great spots to visit and buy things at, but it also allows businesses like the one near us that closed to spread the word that they have a really good product, and get the customers they deserve.

How we built it

We built it with classic HTML, CSS, and JS.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges we ran into was the limitations of using Javascript and not NodeJS. We purposely chose Javascript over NodeJS because we wanted to hone our vanilla programming skills instead of using APIs and decided we wanted to take on an extra challenge. This meant all of the post information and review details were stored in custom classes and retrieved using our own data structures and algorithms, all written by hand. It was pretty difficult, but in the end, we overcame the challenge and succeeded in making our website functional.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of the UXUI of the website because it has a very smooth and clean feel. We are also proud of the whole posting system because it was something brand new we had never tried before but we feel it worked out pretty well.

What we learned

We learned a lot about social websites and community ideas.

What's next for LocalReview

Next, we could add a feature where you can search through posts and look for posts by business, or description.
