Inspiration

The information about the locality where we live is scarce because the sources are limited i.e. local newspapers and word of mouth and when it comes to an area that is new to us, we have nowhere to go. We decided to solve this.

What it does

We present a one-stop solution that not just presents that local news and information to you. But puts it on a map so that you can know about any area in just one glance while ensuring the credibility of the information being served.

How we built it

We gathered data from news sites, available government data sets, web scrapper and public API's to build a prototype of a working progressive web app. We used google maps API to map data corresponding to crime rates, health issues and crimes against women dynamically overlaid on a map in real time using the user's current location. Different location can also be entered through the search bar.

Challenges we ran into

Collecting information. On one hand, we had to scourge the web for available information provided by the government and on the other hand, we were handling unstructured data from the websites we scrapped.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Making the website progressive implementing push notifications. Collecting news from the internet and making sense out of that using Named Entity Recognition Creating an interactive and efficient user interface.

What we learned

We learned the power of datasets, public API's, google maps api, translating a website into a progressive web app .

What's next for Lokality

Since word of mouth is a big source of local information we need to incorporate it in a manner that does not compromise the credibility of the information available on the web app. Developing a portal for onboarding hospitals and police stations so that we can build an actual business around this product. Making this app available to specially abled and supporting native content i.e. making it regional.
