Inspiration
I had been meaning to build something something that utilized live connections to provide real-time experiences to users, so when I stumbled upon I immediately started coming up with ideas.
Some whacky ideas came up in my head (live quiz battles, etc.), but ultimately I wanted to build an application that provides practical values to users. So that's when I came up with Mading Live.
Mading is an Indonesian word, and it stands for Majalah Dinding, which literally means bulletin board. It's a place where communities can put up announcements, events, and other posts that they want to share within their community.
What it does
As mentioned, this application is supposed to resemble a bulletin board. It enhances social interactions within communities. It further amplifies social interactions by providing live or real-time features using Ably.
Here are some of the things you can do with Mading Live:
- Create and manage communities
- Invite members to communities
- Receive and give live notifications
- Chat in real time with community members
- Post things in communities (like a bulletin board)
- Live survey: create a poll/vote/survey with choices and watch your community answer in real time. You will be able to see survey results progress live.
- Manage community within dashboards: using Ably space, you can view exactly which members are online. Data such as number of members and online members will also be updated live.
How we built it
I built it using Next.js as the general framework. The backend was supplied with Supabase. And finally, real time and live capabilities was provided by Ably.
Challenges we ran into
I started this hackathon at the 30 day mark, however, due to work and other things occupying me, I only started developing when I had 7 days left. So I really had to race against time. There are many things that I wanted to implement that I hadn't gotten the chance to, but overall I am proud of what has been accomplished in 7 days.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
One feature that I really like is the live survey. It is definitely something that I was to further develop. It made me think if I should've made an app dedicated to live polls.
What we learned
Learned a lot about the utilities of using live connections.
What's next for Mading Live
There are a lot of features that I didn't get to implement yet due to time restraints. However, the future path is clear and I
