Inspiration
Our project was inspired by the recent events of Hurricanes Helene and Milton in Florida which destroyed thousands of homes and displaced thousands of families. Fannie Mae’s challenge inspired us to think creatively about housing solutions. The challenge focused on improving housing availability and affordability, and we took it a step further by also considering safety. Our goal was to help families find homes that are not only affordable but also safe, especially after natural disasters. By combining budget considerations with safety data, we ensure that families can find homes that meet both their financial and security needs.
What it does
MaeAway helps families find affordable homes based on their budget, needs, and safety by showing properties in safer areas using risk data.
How we built it
We used React to build the user interface, FastAPI for the backend, and integrated Google Maps and FEMA’s risk data. Housing data was pulled through RapidAPIs.
Challenges we ran into
It was tricky to combine housing and risk data while keeping the interface simple and easy to use. Integrating multiple APIs also took time. We also kept running out of credits and had to make over 5 different accounts :(
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We’re proud to have built a platform that helps families find not just affordable, but safer homes after disasters.
What we learned
We learned how to combine different data sources, manage APIs, and build an easy-to-use platform. We also learned about the importance of safe housing.
What's next for MaeAway
To really make the UI look much more modern and smooth and due to the time constraint and tying the front end to backend, this website has a lot of potential!
