It all began with a personal frustration. Scrolling through endless, questionable health advice online, battling the anxiety of illegible prescriptions, and facing the powerlessness of fragmented medical data – these were the thorns pricking the rose of healthcare for many, including the creators of Med 5.

What it does

Prescriptions, reimagined: Ditch the paper slips and embrace secure digital prescriptions delivered directly to your phone. They are Secured, these prescriptions are tamper-proof and instantly verifiable, leaving no room for forgery or doubt.

Your data, your sanctuary: We believe your health data belongs to you, and only you. Med 5 empowers you with complete control over your medical information. Share it with your doctor, research app, or family but the decision is always yours.

Healthcare on the go: Forget the long wait times and inconvenient appointments. Med 5 connects you with qualified healthcare professionals through secure telehealth consultations. Get expert advice and personalized care from the comfort of your own home, no traffic jams or germ-infested waiting rooms to navigate.

Data Demystified: Your medical data no longer dances with faceless corporations. Med 5 puts you in the control room, allowing you to decide who sees what, for how long, and for what purpose. Your health story becomes yours to tell, not theirs to monetize.

Forged prescriptions become a relic of the past: Every legitimate script bears a cryptographic signature, impossible to fake or replicate. Pharmacy shelves no longer harbor imposters, ensuring only authentic meds reach patients.

Doctors gain an extra layer of protection: The system verifies prescriber credentials and identifies suspicious activity, helping prevent doctors from being unwittingly drawn into fraudulent schemes.

How we built it

Decentralized Identity (DID) for All: We established a foundation of trust by creating DIDs for both patients and doctors using Web5.js. These self-sovereign identities enabled secure and verifiable interactions within the Med5 ecosystem.

Data Vaults for Privacy: We leveraged Decentralized Web Nodes (DWNs) to empower users with full control over their health data. This ensured that sensitive information remained private and accessible only to authorized individuals. Enabling Secure Prescriptions:

QR Code Gateways: We implemented a robust QR code generation system for each prescription. This allowed for seamless verification of authenticity at pharmacies and other healthcare providers, safeguarding against counterfeit medications.

Credential Issuers: We issue verifiable credentials to doctors, confirming their qualifications and licensure. These credentials were stored securely in doctors' DIDs, providing transparent and verifiable proof of their expertise.

Challenges we ran into

Limited resources and examples: Web5 is still in its early stages, so extensive documentation and examples might be lacking, leading to trial and error in implementation.

Smaller community: Finding assistance or troubleshooting advice can be more challenging due to the smaller pool of experienced developers.

Decentralized storage complexity: Handling data storage and retrieval across decentralized networks can introduce performance considerations and require careful optimization.

Compatibility with existing systems: Integrating Web5's decentralized data model with traditional healthcare systems and their data structures can present challenges.
