Inspiration

Doctors spend a staggering amount of time on administrative tasks, often taking away from what matters most: patient care. We wanted to create a tool that lightens the documentation burden, giving doctors more time with their patients — and maybe even saving a few wrists from carpal tunnel along the way.

What it does

MEDictator is the ultimate sidekick for doctors. Our web app listens to real-time doctor-patient conversations, transcribes them accurately using medical dictation models, and structures the information into clean, professional SOAP (Subjective, Objective, Assessment, Plan) notes automatically. Doctors get polished notes without extra typing, hassle, or delay.

How we built it

We built MEDictator using a combination of [insert your stack — e.g., React, Flask, Web Speech API, Whisper API, etc.]. The app captures audio streams in real time, uses medical-focused speech recognition models to transcribe them, and applies natural language processing to organize the results into structured SOAP notes. We prioritized speed, reliability, and accuracy to make the experience seamless for healthcare professionals.

Challenges we ran into

Ensuring accurate transcription of medical terminology and abbreviations.

Maintaining real-time speed without sacrificing transcription quality.

Structuring freeform conversation into the rigid format of SOAP notes.

Keeping the interface lightweight and intuitive despite the complexity under the hood.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Achieved high transcription accuracy with medical terms.

Developed a real-time system that doctors can actually use without training.

Successfully formatted unstructured speech into clean, readable SOAP notes.

Built a tool that feels natural, like an invisible assistant rather than another piece of software.

What we learned

Real-world speech recognition is messier and harder than expected, especially with overlapping voices and medical jargon.

Designing for doctors means prioritizing simplicity, clarity, and speed.

Fine-tuning AI models for specific industries (like healthcare) can dramatically improve their performance.

What's next for MEDictator

Integrate with major Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems for seamless adoption.

Expand support for multiple languages and accents.

Launch pilot programs in clinics to collect real-world feedback and iterate.

Explore mobile versions to make transcription even more accessible.
