Inspiration
Our team has a personal connection to individuals with Alzheimer's and dementia, and have witnessed the challenge it is for these individuals to keep track of their medications. So we decided to set out and fulfill this need by creating a web and mobile app for accessibility.
What it does
Through either app, the user chooses or uploads a photo of their prescription label; our app then uses the Google Cloud Vision API and Firebase console to parse text from the image and create personalized schedules meaningful alerts in users' Google calendars.
How we built it
We built the mobile app on Android Studio using Java, linked to a Google Firebase project. The web app was designed using PHP, Bootstrap and HTML/CSS interacting with the Google Cloud Vision API.
Challenges we ran into
Originally we planned to interface with Google Home but due to limitations in their API we could not push the requests we needed. Our team was new to Android Studio and felt it had a steep learning curve with its backend and design.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We were really happy with what we've been able to build using new APIs that we learned during this hackathon, and found it a rewarding experience when persevering through various bugs and challenges.
What I learned
We learned how to develop an Android app with Android Studio and host it on virtual machines, as well as how to use several powerful Google APIs.
What's next for MindfulMed
We'd like to finish integration of the Google Calendar alert feature and improve our UI and UX for both interfaces.
