Inspiration

MONITOSYS was born from a simple but essential need: protecting lives through smarter environments. The original idea came from a personal experience, leaving the stove on unintentionally, and quickly evolved into a system capable of preventing domestic environmental risks like gas leaks, fire hazards, and temperature anomalies. Our inspiration expanded further as we realized that the same technology could serve not only households but entire cities, contributing to global goals for sustainability, safety, and smart living.

What it does

MONITOSYS is an intelligent environmental monitoring system. The current version: Monitosys 1.0 focuses on domestic environments. It allows: • Real-time data collection from environmental sensors (temperature, gas, humidity, air quality, air humidity, soil humidity, noise level, motion.) • Automated alerts via Telegram when dangerous thresholds are reached • A web dashboard for system overview, sensor analysis, and data export • A user assistant (beta) that helps understand system status and risks • Secure data storage in MongoDB, with transmission every second • Easy integration with Wi-Fi in a custom-designed 3D-printed enclosure

The system is fully operational and designed to be scalable for larger environments.

How we built it

The entire system was designed, developed, and deployed in less than one month. It is the result of rapid prototyping, continuous testing, and iterative refinement. • Node-RED for the data pipeline and sensor control • MQTT (HiveMQ) for fast, secure communication • MongoDB for storing structured sensor data • ESP32 and Arduino IDE for firmware and hardware integration • Custom-designed 3D printed case to protect the device • Telegram Bot for fast end-user alerting • Full-stack dashboard built with Node-Red Dashboard • Wokwi for virtual simulations during hardware design

Challenges we ran into

• Building a fully functional hardware-software system **in just one month**
• Frequent connectivity issues with Mosquitto (leading us to adopt HiveMQ)
• Iterative hardware testing to choose the most efficient microcontroller
• Real-time alert calibration to avoid false positives and ensure safety
• Designing a system that is robust enough for home use and scalable to public spaces

Accomplishments that we’re proud of

• Launching the first complete version of MONITOSYS (Monitosys 1.0) **from scratch**
• Ensuring fast, **low-latency (≤ 1 second)** data transmission and alerting
• Building a system that respects key **Sustainable Development Goals** (SDGs):
- Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being — by reducing environmental health risks
- Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities — by designing for urban scalability
-Goal 13: Climate Action — by enabling real-time monitoring of environmental variables
• Aligning our product from day one with the values of resilience, safety, and sustainability

What we learned • Solving real-world problems is more impactful than solving theoretical ones • Developing a reliable product means bridging hardware, software, and human behavior • MQTT and ESP32 form a powerful base for scalable IoT architectures • User experience and accessibility are as important as technical performance • Rapid prototyping (within 30 days) is possible with focused iteration and smart tooling

What’s next for MONITOSYS

The next chapter is MONITOSYS 2.0, with a strong focus on urban deployment and Smart City integration. Here’s what’s coming: • A fully redesigned Smart City version of MONITOSYS, with long-range sensors deployed across neighborhoods and public zones to monitor air quality, urban heat, and pollution patterns. • A real-time dynamic mapping dashboard, similar to Waze, showing environmental risk zones across a city and updating in real-time. • A switch to AI-driven monitoring, where the system learns from user habits and urban patterns to anticipate risks before they escalate. • Seamless integration with municipal systems and open data platforms to support data-driven urban planning and sustainable development. • Preparation for international events such as the World Cup here in Morocco, where urban safety, environmental awareness, and disaster prevention become critical. MONITOSYS 2.0 will help ensure safety in public venues, fan zones, and high-density areas during these events. • A move toward a B2B/B2C model, with subscription-based access to dashboards, alerts, predictive analytics, and maintenance.

With MONITOSYS 2.0, we are not just building a product : we are laying the foundation for cities that are smarter, safer, and more sustainable.
