Mental health Hacks

Inspiration

Mental health is important. However, current mental health resources may not be accessible to most vulnerable individuals due to location, financial limitations, or stigma. In many cases, these individuals may not have someone they can rely on to talk about their problems or to reflect. This can lead to poor quality of life, which can decrease other determinants of health. Let’s take depression as an example. It’s a common illness worldwide. Almost 280 million people in the world have depression. As we all know, this can not end happily for them because depression causes sleeping and eating disorders. It takes all the positive emotions away and leaves you only sadness, anxiety, frustration and tiredness. According to scientific research, persons with anxiety/depression die 7.9 years earlier than others.
That’s why we decided to help not only people with such problems, but also those who want to improve or keep track of their mental health.

What it does

This is an app that helps people who want to track and regulate their emotions. There are numerous studies that show that reflection and communication of such emotions can help individuals to identify the source of their emotions, and thus find better ways to cope and adapt. Moodji enables individuals to identify their emotions and then provides a suggestion based on them. For example, one suggestion could possibly be to do meditation, to improve the health of someone who is feeling stressed.

How we built it

Dart, Ruby, HTML, Flutter

Challenges we ran into

Some team members were in different time zones, and some had commitments over the weekend so it was a bit difficult to communicate over the weekend. However, we were able to make the most of the time that we had. It was also our first time learning Flutter and getting used to the environment.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Being able to work on an impactful project that will positively impact our community and improve mental health outcomes for individuals. We were also proud of having learned flutter and the process of learning has been very valuable.

What we learned

Dart, Ruby, HTML, Flutter In terms of soft skills, we learned about the importance of constant communication, as well as teamwork. We also learned to build our technical skills, and the process of learning in a very short period of time, which enabled us to increase our time management, and general studying/learning skills.

What's next for Moodji

In the future, we would like to include additional features and UI to our interface. We would be interested in having a journal entry area where users can keep a log of all their emotions, as well as a general reflection of the things that happen throughout the day. Other features would include the ability to access their entry logs online through a website, and the ability to listen to music and other relevant resources to destress that would be suggested based on the emotions they selected for that day.
