Inspiration

"I don't understand what my timetable is on Workday. 😕"

We've heard this time and time again, so we decided to take matters into our own hands. Too many students have suffered 🤕 from needing to manually input each course into Google/Apple Calendar tediously to avoid Workday's unintuitive interface. 🚧 The to-do list before the start of the semester grows with each problem Workday fails to solve, and so does the headaches 🤕 students face.

Our team wanted to stop this cycle of inconvenience and minor frustrations. The solution? Meet NestEd 🪺: A nest for your education so your future can take flight. ✈️✨

What it does

NestEd builds a cozy nest with three key features. 🐦

1️⃣ Access your timetable at your fingertips by exporting to your favourite calendar app.

Three clicks. Export from Workday ➡️ Import to NestEd ➡️ Into your most frequently used calendar website/app. NestEd brings convenience, so you don’t need to sweat the small stuff. 😉 Don’t use other productivity tools? No worries. NestEd features a built-in timetable 📅 that’s pretty, user-friendly, and accessible. We’ll make sure you’re not late to your next class! 🏃‍♂️🕒

2️⃣ Know what to expect in your classes.

Integrated with Google Maps 🗺️ and UBCGrades 📈, NestEd makes sure you're prepared for that tough class — yes, even the one with the notorious instructor. 👀 In our course view, access your full course titles, your instructors, and see the grade distribution for past years. Feeling ready for class is easy with NestEd. Just upload your timetable and we’ll do the hard part! 🛠️

3️⃣ Feel motivated to start your day off just right.

Our dashboard says a personalized hello 👋 to our users to show that we care. ❤️ Committing to academics takes energy, so we'll make sure you're recharged! 🔋 Get a new motivational quote every day to help you keep going. NestEd is your most dedicated supporter! 🌞💪

We already have features planned for the next editions of NestEd to ensure you have the most up-to-date 🔄 experience. How we built it

NestEd was developed using the good old reliable MongoDB, Express, React, and Node.js tech stack with Moment, Axios, GitHub, Postman, as well as Google's OAuth 2.0, Google Maps, and UBCGrades APIs. Our wire-framing was conducted in Figma and abided by MaterialUI guidelines. Our development choices ensured we held ourselves to high privacy and security standards while expanding our capabilities.

Challenges we ran into

The NestEd you see today is far from what we first envisioned, but we've grown to love it. 🫶 Some of our original planned features relied on parsing information from course syllabi, but we were unable to implement it consistently. To facilitate the smoothest user experience, we shelved the ideas for now and we're working on them behind the scenes! 🔧💡

To make sure we're still giving our users what they need, we added other features 🎉 that still align with our original vision. We decided to integrate UBCGrades based on the uploaded timetable after we decided not to include the option to import the course syllabus. 📈
