Almost everyone in the hackathon scene uses Slack nowadays. Hell, we even use it just for day-to-day communication among friends. Unfortunately, slack has its drawbacks. It's closed source, expensive, and has a fair share of memory leaks.
We wanted to make something to fill the same niche as slack, but built on top of irc. Ocean-irc is a bot-client pair for replicating many of the functions of slack through DMs and external links.
