Inspiration

We are passionate about public transportation, so we wanted to build something that would help the SFMTA and making decisions about improving public transit.

We aim to aid answering the question: if we could add one more bus to the city, where is the best place to put it?

What it does

We built a website that allows people to quickly view travel times from a point in the city to any other area in the city. We also computed the total amount of time people spend in transit each day, and our website will soon allow users to "test out" adding a bus to a new location and quickly measure the impact of the new bus line.

Challenges we ran into

There isn't much publicly available data about where and how many passengers are boarding public transit at any given point at any given time of data. This is data that is collected by the SMFTA through Automated Passenger Counter (APC) systems, so we believe that this could be useful to a transit agency by allowing them to plug in their own data.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

There was a lot of techincal complexity in recreating the time-dependent graph of all the public transit routes, navigating that graph, and presenting that information in a concise way.

What's next for "one more bus"

Given the limited timeframe of the hackathon, we'll have to continue working on this project to allow it to fully realize its vision of letting anyone try out and measure the impact of adding one more bus!
