Inspiration 💡
Our inspiration for the Pay Equity Tracker project stemmed from the pressing issue of gender pay equity. In today's society, pay disparities based on gender persist, and we wanted to create a tool that empowers individuals to take control of their financial futures. We were motivated by personal experiences and a commitment to addressing gender inequality in the workplace.
What it does 🚀
The Pay Equity Tracker is a web application that allows individuals to anonymously track and compare their salaries and benefits with others in their industry, location, and experience level. It provides users with the ability to create profiles, submit salary data, and access aggregated insights about pay equity. The tool also includes pay gap analysis to identify potential disparities and offers resources and support for addressing pay inequalities.
How we built it 🛠️
We built the Pay Equity Tracker using a robust tech stack. The frontend is developed using React, providing an interactive and user-friendly interface. For the backend, we utilized Ruby on Rails to handle data processing and communication with the database. PostgreSQL serves as our database to securely store user data. To ensure data privacy, we implemented authentication and authorization mechanisms using Devise and JWT. Collaborating as a remote team, we used version control with Git and hosted our code on GitHub.
Challenges we ran into 🧗♀️
During the development process, we encountered several challenges. One of the primary hurdles was designing algorithms for accurate pay gap analysis while maintaining user anonymity. Additionally, implementing a secure and user-friendly authentication system presented its own set of challenges. Effective team communication and time management were vital in overcoming these obstacles.
Accomplishments that we're proud of 🏆
We're proud to have created a tool that addresses a critical social issue. Our accomplishment lies in developing a functional and user-centered application that promotes pay equity awareness. We successfully integrated complex algorithms for data analysis while ensuring the privacy of our users. Additionally, we learned valuable lessons about effective teamwork and project management.
What we learned 🧠
Through the Pay Equity Tracker project, we gained insights into various aspects of web development, data analysis, and social impact. We deepened our technical skills in React and Ruby on Rails, and we honed our abilities to collaborate effectively in a remote team. This project also heightened our awareness of gender pay disparities and the importance of equitable compensation.
What's next for Pay Equity Tracker 🔮
In the future, we plan to enhance the Pay Equity Tracker with additional features. We aim to create a community platform where users can share experiences and strategies for achieving pay equity. We will prioritize data security and privacy measures to ensure user trust. Furthermore, we intend to provide valuable resources on salary negotiation, recognizing pay discrimination, and taking action against pay disparities. Our goal is to expand the impact of the Pay Equity Tracker and continue advocating for gender pay equality.
