Inspiration

The conflict between Gaza and Israel has escalated quickly in recent weeks. There is a lot of polarization between the two groups of people. Many people are losing their homes and their families. I wanted to use my privelge and education to create a mobile app to promote peace between the people of Gaza and Israel by giving the people affected a platform to share their stories. Users can get a summary of the events from the day and view the whole context of the conflict.

What it does

PeacePulse is a mobile app that allows users to share their experience during the Gaza and Israel conflict. Users are encouraged to chat with people from other cultures to build a sense of unity. The app also provides accurate and unbiased information about the conflict, history, an cultures of the people of Israel and Gaza. A Fake News and Propaganda Detector is built into the app where users can upload a link to a news article or tweet and determine if the post contains fake news. Users can also learn phrases from other languages. PeacePulse facilitates open and respectful dialogue between users from different backgrounds to encourage understanding and empathy.

How we built it

This project is an native android application. User information and data is stored in MongoDB database and retrieved upon signing in. The summaries of the conflict day by day is stored on the MongoDB database and updated frequently when news gets released. Using Hendera, the AI for reading the new news never sleeps and is always searching for information to consume to its generative algorithm. Tensorflow is used for training the ML model to detect fake news. We use generative AI from Google to write summaries from large pools of news articles.

Challenges we ran into

This is the first time we used MongoDB with a native android application. I really enjoyed the generative AI workshop and wanted to use it in my project. I found it difficult to get started and to create summaries with generative AI from Google.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I am proud how responsive the android application is and how quick the mobile app can retrieve data. We thought of a clever way to cache the data so we can demo it quicker without waiting long for the results.

What we learned

I learned a lot of context of the Israel-Gaza conflict through developing this AI. I have more empathy for the people in Gaza and Israel after creating this app for them.

What's next for PeacePulse

I want to collaborate with organizations that promote peace around the world and here in Dearborn to advertise their events on the app.
