Inspiration
Project Inspiration Lupus takes a significant toll on both the body and the mind. This can make it difficult to feel motivated to take ones medication and implement the necessary lifestyle changes that come with Lupus. This is why we chose to take on the Amandus challenge, encouraging users to take care of themselves by growing their own butterflies while tracking their progress. Inspiration Apps Gamified wellness apps such as Finch and Flora; Health tracker apps such as Clue and Ada
What it does
Gamified Wellness App for Lupus Patients Users are given a caterpillar that they can name. They take care of the caterpillar by performing tasks -- primarily through logging their medication intake. When the user logs their medication, the caterpillar gets fed and gains "Berry Points." After a certain amount of points are earned, the caterpillar will turn into a cocoon. After earning even more points, the cocoon hatches into a butterfly that can be added to the users "Butterfly Garden." When the garden reaches a capacity of 10 butterflies, the butterflies can be released. The user can also log their symptoms and pain scale every day, which is logged in a calendar view to show progress over time.
How we built it
Figma The entire app was built using Figma. Currently, the wireframes are based on an iPhone 14/15 Pro. Each function was added individually and programmed to work as expected. Procreate All logos, animations, images, etc were hand drawn/animated using Procreate and were uploaded to our Figma workspace.
Challenges we ran into
Limited Customizability Since this app is framed in Figma currently, its capabilities are limited to those that Figma allow. This can be worked around by creating the app using Flutter and Dart. Incentivization It was difficult to come up with true incentivization to keep the user coming back to track their medicine intake, symptoms, etc. There is a delicate balance between encouraging the users to not miss their medication, while not creating a high pressure environment that can lead to instilling discouragement or fear into the user. However, there is a lot of room for possibility in this regard, and as development furthers, it will become easier to showcase the usefulness of the app.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Artistic Design All logos, icons, characters etc. were completely hand drawn/animated. User-Oriented UX Our UI/UX is very streamlined, ADA accessible, and pleasing to the eye.
What we learned
Figma for App Development Figma was a brand new software to most of us, so there was a learning curve attached to that. Lupus Background Understanding the background of Lupus and how it affects patients was very important to being able to create a user oriented and relevant program.
What's next for PillarLife
Reframing We plan to reframe PillarLife using Flutter and Dart programming. New Features We will create new incentivization activities, adding customizability for the users' caterpillars/cocoons/butterflies and gardens, and adding more wellness features such as a fitness tracker. Account System We want to make an account system where users can add friends and visit other user's gardens. This helps build a sense of community and makes the user fee less isolated, and may boost incentivization. Chatbot Implementing a GPT-3 AI powered medical chatbot would allow users to ask questions and receive basic symptom analysis. This would come with the disclaimer that all advice given by the chatbot should not be taken as professional medical advice, and serious concerns should be brought up with ones doctor.
