Inspiration
The team was inspired by issues we found in our daily lives. It is hard to control and feel motivated to manage your screen time. We wanted to create an application that helps you with that in not only an intuitive and helpful manner, but a fun one!
What it does
Our cross platform phone app streamlines your screen time and productivity. Use our app set goals and benchmarks for your screen time standards in the day, week, or month. Block out time frames or individual applications, or take a break if you need one. Complete goals by yourself or with friends to win tokens for prizes to cash our from the machine. With more users comes more sponsors and prizes!
How we built it
To start our primary team designer Katie created an outline for the application in Figma that we could follow as our guideline. As she worked on assets the rest of the team Mary Elizabeth, Mary-Ann, and Eden worked on setting up the application in Flutter using the language dart for cross platform compatibility across devices. We worked on setting up assets, creating buttons, webpages, and making sure the functionality was there.
Challenges we ran into
This was the majority of the teams first hackathon. It took us a while to figure out what languages, tools, and applications were needed to create this project. Including set up, this went well into the afternoon. Once all that was figured out, our programming side of the team had to work with Flutter and the dart language which none of us had ever worked with before so there was a bit of a learning curve.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Being the most of the teams first hackathon, there is a lot we got done! Katie created some amazing graphics and an entire outline on Figma. Mary Elizabeth, Mary-Ann, and Eden mastered buttons, creating separate views, and managing assets. All while learning the dart language on the fly in the past 25 hours. In all everyone worked really hard and stayed determined. Everyone was a great teammate, and it made working on this project a lot of fun.
What we learned
Overall, the communication aspect was what allowed us to get the project done as far, and well as we did. Being able to ensure all of us were on the same page was a daunting task, but asking for clarification from each other, drawing out the ideas in order to see everything visually, and sharing checkpoints were the most crucial points in successfully completing the project. Additionally, Eden, Mary Elizabeth, and Mary-Ann all learned the dart language and Flutter program, which was crucial for being able to create the project in and of itself.
What's next for Pixel Pursuit
We would love to keep improving Pixel Pursuit. Given the chance we would increase the level of interactivity and functionality in the application. Making room for sponsors, accounts, and connectivity would help push this app to the next level.
