Inspiration
It's hard to stay on track without planning your future. Have you ever wanted to map out your undergraduate years at college in advance effectively? Plan-It UTD aims to provide an all-in-one solution for students at The University of Texas at Dallas to plan and prepare their college degree plan. No more stressing about planning your degree!
What it does
This website aggregates the many useful and necessary resources students use to plan out their degree and gain a full understanding of what an undergraduate degree in CS at UTD looks like. It's simple enough to navigate with ease while also providing vital information that makes the difference in a students' confidence regarding their future.
How we built it
When building Plan-It UTD, our team used JavaScript, HTML, CSS, and React.JS. In addition, the mobile app design was created using Figma.
Challenges we ran into
Throughout the development of Plan-It UTD we experienced several challenges. The development of this project exposed each of our team members to new programming languages and libraries, meaning most of the time we were researching how to do what we envisioned going in. We also heavily felt the time constraints, especially at the end of the first day.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Before starting this project, our team members had never worked together, however, we're proud of the communication and flow that we gained and were able to build throughout the process. We're also proud of having built our project in the amount of time we had! Again, none of us had much experience in web/app development, so the fact that we were able to create the product that we did is exciting and inspiring!
What we learned
Each one of our team members developed their front end skills in addition to gaining a better understanding of what goes into building a website and app from scratch. We also strengthened our collaboration and soft skills while grasping what a realistic timeline looks like through project management.
What's next for Plan-It UTD
Ideally this website would be offered to incoming freshmen/first-year CS students at orientation, though eventually we plan on making it accessible to all UTD students of all grades. Before we reach that stage, however, we'd like to implement more functionalities such as a drag and drop element to the degree builder to allow users to customize it themselves. In addition, this would mean adding a functionality allowing users to create a profile. We'd also like to add/improve upon the UI/UX elements, add a chatbot, and also add scripts that automatically update resources on Plan-It UTD as they're updated on the official UTD website.
