In today's digital age, AI is becoming an integral part of our lives, but few realize the heavy environmental toll it takes. The energy consumed by AI models like ChatGPT can be staggering, contributing to a larger carbon footprint and an increase in our global climate crisis. This realization hit us hard, especially as we dive deeper into understanding AI's impact on energy use. We felt the need to bring awareness to the masses—making AI's energy consumption something people can see, understand, and even change.

That's how PowerPrompt was born. 🌍💡 We’re here to educate and inspire change in how we interact with AI, aiming to make users more conscious of their digital energy usage and the planet’s well-being. 🌱

⚙️ What it does

PowerPrompt is more than just a Chrome extension—it's a call to action for the planet! 🌎⚡

🌿 Raising Awareness: PowerPrompt gives users real-time feedback on the energy consumption of their ChatGPT interactions. Our friendly monkey mascot 🐒 updates users on their energy usage, token count, and carbon footprint—helping them see the environmental impact of their conversations.

🎮 Gamified Feedback: The extension provides a playful and engaging way to track your interactions with AI. As energy usage increases, the monkey’s mood changes, visually representing the impact of our actions. It's an engaging way to spark a conversation about energy consumption while making it fun! 🎮💚

🌍 Educational Website: Along with the Chrome extension, we built a website to dive deeper into the mission of reducing AI’s environmental footprint. It features a prompt engineering help page, where users can test inputs and get feedback on how to craft more efficient queries. The website also offers insightful articles on AI energy consumption, carbon footprints, and the industry’s environmental impact.

🏗️ How we built it

Our Chrome extension is built with React and Vite, offering a smooth, fast interface that’s easy to interact with. The extension uses Chrome’s Manifest V3 specifications, integrating a content script to monitor ChatGPT conversations, a background service worker to manage state, and the Chrome Storage API to store data.

The website, built with React and Vite JS, serves as a hub for learning, offering responsive routing, animation features, and seamless integration with backend logic. For the AI simulation, we use random data to show energy consumption patterns, providing users with a clear understanding of how energy usage correlates with tokens and time spent interacting with AI.

💡 Challenges we ran into

🚧 Chrome Extension Architecture: Managing the communication between the content script, background service worker, and popup while staying within Chrome's security restrictions posed a major challenge.
🔄 Real-time Data Updates: Ensuring that the dynamic data from ChatGPT conversations (like token counts and energy usage) were updated in real-time was tricky, especially when syncing across multiple parts of the extension.
🔧 Website Complexity: Building and organizing the various components for the website—prompt engineering tools, educational articles, and metrics tracking—required meticulous planning.

👀 What’s next for PowerPrompt

🔌 Energy Model Integration: In the future, we aim to move from simulated data to actual energy calculations, accurately reflecting the energy cost of various AI models and their real-world carbon footprint.
🧠 Wider AI Model Compatibility: Currently, PowerPrompt only works with ChatGPT. We plan to extend this functionality to support other AI models, so users can track their energy usage across platforms.
🌱 User Tracking & Improvement: Adding a backend will allow us to track user energy usage over time and offer personalized suggestions to reduce energy consumption, encouraging greener AI habits.
📈 Advanced Feedback: We want to improve the feedback system for the prompt engineering help page, enabling AI-powered suggestions to optimize users' prompts for both performance and energy efficiency.
🎨 Design Upgrades: We’ll continue enhancing the user interface and experience of both the extension and website, ensuring they’re as user-friendly and informative as possible.
