Inspiration 💡

Renting and the whole process behind it can be extremely tedious and hard to navigate through. The receipts and records of maintenances and any nuances that pop up get lost in track.

In fact, a lot of the times such instances when brought to light are straight up denied. This hence motivated us to create a platform to enable a seamless ledger system for processes, automate tedious tasks as well as ensuring there is a transparent and seamless processing platform for renting!

Hence, we introduce to you Rentalnet, a one-stop rental platform that encompasses all tedious documentation details, integrates use of automated payments and much more, all powered by the FLOW blockchain.

What it does 🦾

Terms and Conditions

  • Has automated contract provided by FLOW which is to be signed by the potential tenant when renting the property
  • This enforces the tenant to go through all the terms and conditions listed on the document since this is recorded on FLOW blockchain, and the tenant would not be able to deny anything later.

Security Deposit

  • Now there won't be any third party payment involvement since the security deposit feature would already be integrated into the platform when the user browses the property.
  • This again utilizes the in-built FLOW blockchain currency to handle the transactions seamlessly throughout the platform
  • For any dispute, the ledger of the FLOW blockchain can be referred, in any case the owner denies receiving the security deposit.

Dispute Resolution

  • For any complaints or any disputes that you want to track, there is a separate section to raise one
  • The idea behind this is reliant on the fact there is a "tracking/receipt" system to ensure the dispute gets resolved quicker, with both the parties only focusing on details true to the event.
  • The details are constantly getting logged on the FLOW blockchain, hence, every activity gets tracked.

Notice

  • Any and all sort of power cuts, maintenance schedules or anything of that sort can be accessible here.
  • This again ensures there is a track record of any recurring issues or events happening, hence, ensuring there is more room for one to pinpoint any and all sort of previous data for reference

Transparent Maintenance Requests

  • Allows the user to raise maintenance requests, these requests again being tracked on FLOW ensures actions are taken fast and seriously.
  • A lot of the times there have been issues faced by tenants that owner denies requests or says it is just a recent issue that can be resolved later
  • With ledger acting as a base, there is more room for requests getting tackled and handled rightly by both

Auto-pay with FLOW

  • Rent being due and surpassing the deadline can always become a hassle
  • With our platform, you can set up an auto-pay feature that pays out FLOW rental currency to the owner without any hassle
  • Shows the due date in DD:HH::MM:SS format on the page for easy understanding

How we built it ⚙️

  • We leveraged using FLOW in our project since we realized a lot of our main goals aligned with what FLOW has to provide.
  • We utilized its smart contract and ledger system to make most of the features run on our website.
  • Thankfully, FLOW also had built-in currency that ensured the payments could also be maintained in a decentralized manner.
  • FLOW also had features to ensure there was FLOW reference wallet login integration possible on the platform, this made the onboarding process for the users much easier since the was ecosystem consistencies maintained.

Challenges we ran into 🏁

  • Fortunately, we were able to finish our project despite starting quite later, there were a lot of confusion on what application we should go ahead with among the multiple ideas that popped up in the discussion.
  • After some thorough analysis when we decided to stick to Rentalnet we realized that there could be a possibility of having much lesser time than what we perceived to have, navigating through the vision of our product and understanding what all features to integrate, what that particular feature would do started to become a much more tedious task than we thought!
  • Though despite these challenges, being able to make a purpose driven, real world problem-solving project that is fully functional in such a tight timeline is a huge achievement for us!

Accomplishments that we're proud of 🏆

  • Leveraging the use of FLOW and being able to make a fully functional project implementation despite starting out super late.
  • Enhancing the use of blockchain in a much more unconventional domain than what is expected, promoting growth and expansion of blockchain in multiple domains.
  • Understanding the user pain points and conducting some user research on what to build and how to go about it in our application, we are super excited to scale this application on a larger level.

What we learned 🧠

  • We realized how much of a complicated process housing and renting can be, in fact, the amount of documentation required to be made us realize a lot of the pain points that one faces during such situations.
  • This, hence, gave us much more insight on how to build and stack our features in a way that would make more sense in the long run for the users.
  • We also learned how to leverage the use of blockchain, the ledger system, transparency and easy to access records and receipts of various events made us fixate on this platform.

What's next? 🔮

  • Holistic property viewing platform for all renters
  • Direct contact options between tenants and owners
  • Smart contracts that work with two-way agreements
  • Tenant forums for similar location/apartment complexes for better connectivity
  • Custom feature integration to help owners setup extra additional utility items for the tenants.
