Inspiration
Our inspiration was popular websites such as GoodReads and LetterboxD, which make reviewing creative content fun and engaging for people of all ages and demographics! Social media-fying reviewing different forms of entertainment, in ProjectGG's case video games, is an untapped niche market that has only been increasing over time!
What it does
ProjectGG is a social media reviewing website where gamers can come together and review, share, post, talk about, and connect over their favorite video games. ProjectGG contains a home page, a games tab to search and review games, a community tab to connect with friends with, a sign-up/log-in system, and a profile that any user can stylize.
How we built it
Currently, ProjectGG is still in its development stages, but we have provided a prototype of which we will continuously build off of! This project was designed and built by Maximus and I over 36 hours, with Max handling the back-end development and me handling the front-end development. A hefty mixture of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, EJS, NodeJS, Express, and mySQL went into both sides of ProjectGG's development.
Challenges we ran into
This was my first time ever using or even being exposed to HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, let alone any type of web development. This proved to be a steep learning curve, with syntax being my greatest enemy, especially when concerning JavaScript. This lack of experience in front-end languages slowed me down, so I was not nearly as efficient as I normally would be when coding in a language more familiar. Max's greatest challenge was time, as he started off this HackAThon with the plan to create a whole working authentication system during WiNGHacks. This proved to be much more difficult after encountering a time-consuming issue with cookies. This was an especially tough feat since it was just him managing the back-end. This is when we shifted over to the idea of simply creating a prototype in order to get our idea of ProjectGG out into the world!
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I am proud of being able to say that I was part of a team who made a functional website at a HackAThon. I am proud of my new coding skills, especially in HTML and CSS. I have become increasingly comfortable with those two languages towards the end of the event. Max is proud of his new skills concerning database management. He is also proud of our ability to overcome obstacles throughout this event, as we had to change our plan multiple times in order to meet the deadline.
What we learned
I learned so much about the front-end development of websites, with a heavy emphasis on HTML and CSS. Max learned about databases, and how to more efficiently use software such as Express and NodeJS.
What's next for ProjectGG
We want to finish what we originally started, and that was to create a fully functioning social media website out of this prototype.
