💡Inspiration
We are educated from a very young age of only one time use period products. These period products have so many effects on the environment in fact, a menstruator will use up to 12,000 disposable menstrual products in their lifetime which would be enough to fill 2 minibuses. In addition, we as menstruators no longer feel comfortable tracking our period without being worried that our data is being sold which could potentially be used against us with the overturning of Roe V. Wade.
🌟What it does
Our app lets the user make an account and store their information. The user then has the option to track their period, find women’s health centers nearby, calculate to educate the user how much waste they can produce from their period, find statistics about the environmental impact of one’s period, and get connected with resources with more information about sustainable alternatives.
🔨How we built it
We built punctual. using Java and CSS on Android Studio. We also used Firebase to store the user’s login information. We utilized the Google Maps API as well to connect the user to women’s centers nearby.
🚧Challenges we ran into
Building this application brought many difficulties to us as we had never coded an application on Android Studio and of this scale. For the period tracker, we struggled pre-marking and calculating dates on the calendar for following months. For connecting the user to nearby women’s center, we had the most trouble getting the Places API to work and populate multiple markers onto the Google Map. We also struggled connecting the file for the resources/videos for the user to get a bit more knowledge about more sustainable period products.
🌱What we learned
We learned how to navigate through Android Studio and develop an application collaboratively using Java and CSS. Natalie learned how to use Google Maps API, specifically calling the Places API to search for nearby women’s centers in relation to the user. Mira learned how to create a page that calculates the user's total amount of money they can save and the amount of waste they can prevent going into landfills by taking input about the user's preferred menstrual product, the duration of their cycle, the amount of periods they get in a year, and their age. Jenelle learned how to successfully use Firebase to store a user’s login information for a more personalized experience. Izzy learned how to integrate a calendar feature in an application and how to embed YouTube videos on a page. Together we were able to get these separate moving parts into a seamless application that has the capability to function with one another.
🍂 What's next for punctual.
In the future, we would like the have this application available to iOS users as well. We would want to make the period tracker fully functional through the months with a notification feature. For the calculator, we would like to add more specific options to more accurately calculate and represent the user and their consumption best. For the map, in the future we would like to have the locations of women’s centers be more specific to the user’s current location, as well as add a community aspect with reviews.
