Inspiration
For many young primary school students in the western world accessing online classes is just a matter of opening their laptop or smartphone and making a couple of clicks. However, for many students in rural Africa this is not the case. Not only do these students lack access to smart devices but often the areas they live in lack an internet connection. Punzila plays on solving this
What it does
Punzila is an IVR application that allows young students in rural Africa to access classes via their mobile phones. Students can:
- Access audio lessons through their mobile phones
- Search for lessons and classes using voice commands
- Subscribe to classes
How it works
Before classes and lessons can be accessed by students, they first need to be added. An NGO, School, Teacher or any facilitatory does this through quickbase.
Firstly, a class is created. The class is given a name and tags. These tags act as keywords which will be used by the student to find the class via voice search.
Once a class is created, lessons can be added to it. An audio file for lesson, title and a list of topics is provided when adding a lesson. The topics, just like tags in classes, are used to find the lesson via voice search. When added, students who are subscribed to the class will be notified via SMS of the new lesson.
Students subscribe to classes by simply searching for the class e.g "Geography". Once searched, a student can then subscribe to that class.
