Inspiration
Women’s safety is a critical issue worldwide, particularly on university campuses and within fraternity houses. This website was born out of a desire to provide a platform where women can share honest reviews and support one another. We envisioned a space where questions like “Is this a safe place for us?”, “Do others recommend it?”, or “Are their parties both safe and fun?” could be answered openly and transparently. By empowering women to make informed decisions and foster a community of care, we hope this platform becomes a valuable tool for safety and connection. Inspired by SecureHer, a women’s safety and empowerment organization founded by one of our team members, this initiative reflects our commitment to protecting and uplifting women, especially in social settings. What it does
Purdue FratCheck allows you to review, comment, find the location of and rate a specific frat based on your experience. It is an interactive platform as it also allows you to use an AI chat to ask any questions related to fraternities at Purdue.
Challenges we ran into
One of the major challenges we faced was our inability to commit to a single idea. We had multiple concepts we wanted to execute, but instead of diving in, we spent an excessive amount of time planning rather than doing. It was only later that we truly understood the significance of the phrase “learning by doing,” especially in the field of coding. By simply starting, we not only gained much-needed clarity on our project but also managed to incorporate several “essential” features that hadn’t even crossed our minds during the planning phase
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are definitely proud of delivering a functional project that successfully incorporates both the essential features and additional elements to enhance the overall product. Not only did we push ourselves out of our comfort zones, but we were also incredibly grateful to have a dedicated team driven by a shared passion for turning this idea into reality.
What we learned
We have gained a wide range of skills, from web scraping an existing database to developing a fully functional AI chatbot and utilizing Groq for summarization. It was an incredibly thrilling experience, as it marked the first time we explored many modules and frameworks we had never encountered before.
What's next for PurdueFratCheck
We want to expand to other universities and include more features such as cab services and a walk buddy.
