Inspiration

Google's default new tab page seemed a little bare to us with only up to 6 shortcuts. In addition, most of the page seemed to be filled with empty space, space that we felt was wasted and could be used to display useful information.

What it does

Allows the user to quickly and efficiently access useful websites including weather websites and news outlets.

How we built it

Using Repl.it, we were able to successfully edit code as a group simultaneously. Since we had no prior HTML experience, we had to use a mix of KhanAcademy, CodeAcademy, W3Schools, and Geeks4Geeks to learn it.

Challenges we ran into

We had originally planned to code our program in Java and use Java applets to embed our code into an HTML website; however, we learned that Oracle had discontinued Java applets, and thus we had to abandon our original project, a multiplayer-platformer minigame, losing multiple hours of progress.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

One accomplishment was learning HTML in such a short period of time in order to finish our project. We are also proud of the overall clean aesthetic of the website.

What we learned

We learned that Java can no longer be run directly on websites due to the discontinuation of Java applets. We also learned that HTML is not too difficult a language to learn, since we were able to learn the basics of the language in less than a day.

What's next for HomePage

For the next steps, we might consider adding frequently visited websites and customizable elements such as the background. We would also consider adding sticky notes to keep track of notes and dates.
