Inspiration
Growing up I saw how vulnerable women, especially teen mothers and high school dropouts, struggle to find sustainable employment. At the same time, families faced financial hardship from frequently replacing baby clothes due to rapid infant growth. Ranga Initiative was born from the desire to empower these women by involving them directly in co-creating affordable, expandable baby clothes. This approach fosters both economic independence and community resilience, directly tackling poverty and promoting sustainable livelihoods.
What it does
Ranga Initiative will train vulnerable women and teen mothers to design and produce expandable baby clothes that grow with the child. Through this co-creation, women gain valuable employable skills and become income earners. Our products will then help reduce families’ need to constantly buy new baby clothes, easing financial burdens while minimizing textile waste.
How we will build it
This project will be co-created with vulnerable women in Rwanda, combining their insights with sustainable textile innovation. We will develop local partnerships with NGOs and health institutions for production and distribution. And we will integrate a train-the-trainer model to build community capacity and ensure scalability.
Challenges we ran into
We haven't faced difficulties yet, but we expect to encounter some while sourcing affordable, quality materials locally and training and maintaining production standards among newly skilled women required ongoing learning and adaptation.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Fully designed and implemented our website for online presence, visibility and partnership attraction. We have conducted about 10 in-depth interviews with vulnerable women to understand their needs and perspectives. Additionally, we photojournaled two teen mothers, capturing their stories to raise awareness and inform our co-creation and training processes.
What we learned
True sustainability comes from empowering people as co-creators, not just beneficiaries.
What's next for Ranga Initiative
Secure funding for our pilot training as we are building on our initial interviews and photojournal work, our next steps definetely focus on deepening community engagement through expanded co-creation workshops with vulnerable women and teen mothers.
