Inspiration
It was always my dream to have an RC car or RC plane when I was a kid.
What it does
I created an easy starting point for making games with remote-controlled vehicles (or any other units). It provides a customizable Gamepad and Remote Unit system for cars, drones, planes, and more. Many controls, camera views, and vehicle settings can be changed directly in the editor.
How we built it
The world is structured around simple examples. Each Remote Unit is built with clean project structure and assets for easy remixing. My idea was that you
- Play example cars, planes, drones.
- Decide "I want to create an drone racing game".
- You delete all but drone, customize it, create an environment and custom game logic. The whole boilerplate is already done for you.
Challenges I ran into
It's hard to find the best point between "highly customizable but not usable" and actually useful. I decided to not overengineer the solution, so it's easy to start with.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
It's really easy to customize a vehicle or to create a new one.
What I learned
It was actually fun to do this project, even more than creating a complete gameplay.
What's next for RC Playground
I will implement improvements from this world in my other game, Pocket RC Cars. And I will add more example vehicles to this world and publish it as my own remix.
