💡 Inspiration
Investing in real estate—especially vacation homes—can be risky and confusing. Hidden factors like flood zones, crime rates, or short-term rental restrictions aren’t always clear from a listing. We wanted to build a tool that acts like a digital detective, giving everyday investors the full picture before they commit to a property.
🛠 What it does
Realty Check is a smart, no-fluff web app that helps users evaluate real estate investments with confidence. It pulls in data from Redfin to:
- Detect risks (natural disasters, crime, HOA lawsuits, flips)
- Forecast ROI and rental income
- Compare multiple properties side-by-side
- Provide location-based insights and financial snapshots
🧱 How we built it
We built Realty Check using:
- HTML, CSS, and Vanilla JavaScript for the frontend
- Sample property datasets (mocked for demo purposes)
- LocalStorage to track compared properties
- A modular file structure with pages for listing search, comparison, and risk reports
🧩 Challenges we ran into
- Finding free, reliable real estate APIs was tough
- Designing a clean, functional UI without frameworks like React pushed us to get creative with plain JavaScript and DOM manipulation
- Making the compare feature intuitive took several UX tweaks
🏆 Accomplishments that we're proud of
- A fully functional property comparison and risk analysis tool built in just 20 hours
- Address-based search with live filtering and user interaction
- A clean, modern interface with a standout brand and original UI/UX design
- Strong collaboration and task ownership throughout the build
📚 What we learned
- How to design effective data-driven UI components
- The value of simplifying complex information for everyday users
- How to pivot and prototype quickly under time pressure
🚀 What's next for Realty Check
- Integrate real APIs like Estated, Realty Mole, or ATTOM for live property data
- Add user accounts to save liked listings and track investment goals
- Expand to international markets
- Launch a mobile-responsive version for investors on the go
