Inspiration
Our inspiration came from the sheer amount of times we had seen others either improperly dispose of hazardous materials or refused to dispose of them at all. We understood this was hurting the environment a lot, and needed to be fixed urgently.
What it does
We give information on how to properly dispose of 22 different recyclable items. From paper to CDs, we will be able to give you information on sanitary and proper disposal procedures, and where to dispose them.
How we built it
We used bootstrap, html, javascript, css, and jquery to design the basic parts of our website. We then used several different APIs provided by google, including their geo-location API and their Maps API.
Challenges we ran into
We ran into severe challenges as we tried to work with a somewhat deprecated API. The lack of online resources made it hard to fully understand the API, which lead us down several misleading paths. We had to deal with the sheer number of files, and a huge amount of information we had to process.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We were successfully able to locate the user using the Google Geo-Location API. We were also happy with our accomplishments on creating a interactive, and intuitive UI.
What we learned
We learned how to use confusing APIs and format the final product to create a fully functioning, beautiful interactive program.
What's next for Recycle
We hope to add a system of barcode and item recognition, using computer vision, to quickly show exactly how to dispose of it properly, very quickly.
