Inspiration

The idea for our reMindA glasses came from having volunteered at senior homes. We often saw residents struggling to remember the faces of those they loved, with no family members by their side to help. Watching them search for familiarity in a room full of strangers was very heartbreaking. It made us realize how isolating Alzheimer’s can be, not just for the patients but for their families as well. We wanted to create something that could bring back a sense of connection and comfort, something that would allow these seniors to see a familiar face and remember the love that’s still there!

What it does

reMindA glasses help Alzheimer's patients recognize and remember their loved ones. The glasses use advanced facial recognition technology to identify familiar faces and display the person’s name and relationship on a discreet screen, helping patients maintain connections and reduce feelings of confusion and isolation.

How we built it

We developed reMindA glasses by integrating facial recognition software with smart glasses hardware. The system uses a machine learning algorithm trained to recognize faces from a database uploaded by the user's family. We focused on creating a user-friendly and intuitive design, ensuring the glasses are both comfortable and effective.

Challenges we ran into

One of the key challenges we faced was connecting the hardware of the glasses to our software, ensuring seamless communication between the two. We also encountered some minor issues with the "reMindA" dashboard website, which manages the facial recognition database and user settings. Despite these hurdles, we were able to conquer them through persistent troubleshooting and refinement.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We’re proud of creating a working prototype that accurately recognizes and identifies loved ones, providing a meaningful solution for Alzheimer's patients. We're also proud of overcoming the technical challenges related to hardware-software integration and developing a user-friendly interface that meets the needs of seniors.

What we learned

We learned that patience and persistence are key when working through tough challenges, like getting the hardware and software to work together seamlessly. This experience taught us a lot about solving problems and fine-tuning our design. More importantly, it helped us better understand the real needs of Alzheimer's patients and their families, making sure our product truly supports and comforts them.

What's next for reMindA

Next, we plan to enhance the comfort and accessibility of our reMindA glasses by making them lighter and easier to wear. We also aim to refine the facial recognition system to improve accuracy, even in challenging conditions like low light or unusual angles. Additionally, we want to expand the "reMindA" dashboard by adding features like automatic updates to the facial recognition database and customizable notifications for caregivers. We hope to make this product available in healthcare and senior living communities, with the ultimate goal of improving the lives of Alzheimer's patients and their families!
