Inspiration
We created Reminiscence because we’ve experienced firsthand how difficult it is to capture the emotions and reactions tied to shared memories through flat, 2D representations like those found on a camera roll. We wanted to develop a solution that allows people to relive their memories in immersive, shared spaces—Memory Rooms—where these moments can come to life again.
What it does
Reminiscence lets users step into an immersive and artistic representation of their memories. In the Memory Rooms, users can interact with floating memory bubbles in the sky, which can be opened via touch to reveal pictures or videos. These moments can be explored together while talking in real-time through voice chat. Using a mobile application, users can upload their photos, and Memory Rooms are automatically generated. Access is shared via a key-code, allowing others to join and experience the space together.
How we built it
We used Unity and the Meta SDK to create the interactive environment, enabling users to move and interact with the floating memory bubbles. The Meta SDK also allows users to share the space as avatars, enhancing the collaborative experience. For the mobile app prototype, we created a clickable design in Figma to illustrate the upload and room generation process.
Challenges we ran into
We encountered difficulties setting up the Meta Movement SDK and faced time constraints, which limited the number of features we could implement in this iteration.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
The 3D representation of the Memory Room in our prototype is visually appealing and fun to interact with. We’re especially proud of the immersive experience we’ve created.
What we learned
We learned how gamification within the spatial experience can enhance 2D experiences. Especially in this time that social media platforms are in favor of the market values and contents are being shown to us without our consent. People need a shared spatial spaces to review their memory and talk together in real-time instead of passive viewing.
What's next for Reminiscence
We plan to develop a customizable lobby where users can personalize their space. Additionally, we aim to introduce new rooms with enhanced interactions, playing music rooms and allowing users to engage with their memories in even more meaningful ways.
