Inspiration
Our project, Remix City, was inspired by our personal journey as a husband-and-wife team who love building together. We recently got married in an industrial warehouse, and we wanted to bring that same industrial-chic aesthetic into a virtual space. We layered this with our love for Bossa Nova and jazz, aiming for a surreal, nostalgic, and groovy disco vibe for remixing that feels both unique and welcoming.
What it does
Remix City is the ultimate Horizon Worlds asset library. It’s a space where builders can test and explore assets through fun, interactive elements like flying go-karts and hidden prototype guns. The entire world is a remixable blueprint, providing the essential tools and components for new creators to fast-track their own projects.
How we built it
Our workflow extended beyond the Horizon Worlds desktop editor. We utilized professional 3D design tools like Blender and SketchUp to create detailed geometry. We also experimented with using and building MCP servers and AI agents to generate unique shapes and models that were then imported into the world. This approach allowed us to create a world that is not only visually distinct but also built with a modular, scalable foundation.
Challenges we ran into
As native software developers, our biggest challenge was transitioning to a completely new workflow. We are used to coding for a 2D environment, and learning to properly scale and manage entities in a 3D VR space was far from easy. It took several weeks to get comfortable with the editor and establish a consistent, efficient process. However, overcoming these challenges made us proud of the final product and our ability to learn and adapt. While using a Blender MCP server to draft and execute python scripts to create shapes was effective, SketchUp proved to be a much more efficient place to start many assets. We went so far as to create and open source our own plugin so anyone can export from SketchUp to Horizon Worlds! https://github.com/ChrisLally/sketchup-to-horizon-worlds-exporter
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Simply getting a working and cohesive world built in Horizon Worlds was a huge accomplishment for us, especially as newcomers to the platform. We are incredibly proud of what we've learned and created. We believe this world will be genuinely useful for many new developers, and we hope it inspires others to get started on their own building journeys.
What we learned
This was our first time building anything in VR, so the learning curve was steep. We discovered the importance of creating a cohesive and consistent visual theme from the outset. We also learned how to integrate professional 3D tools like Blender and SketchUp into our workflow, and, most importantly, we learned to leverage Meta's GenAI tools to accelerate development. We used AI to create unique skies and assets, and to help develop scripts for advanced features like our flying go-karts. This experience taught us that AI can be a powerful tool for rapid prototyping and asset creation.
What's next for Remix City
We see Remix City as a living project. We have already launched a dedicated website with a feedback board where the community can contribute ideas and assets (https://remixcity.world). This world was built with the future in mind; it's designed to be a growing library of assets that new developers and builders can continuously leverage.
