About the Project
Inspiration
Our project, REPlasticReThink, was born out of a deep concern for the environmental impact of plastic waste on our planet. Witnessing the staggering levels of plastic pollution and its harmful effects on ecosystems inspired us to take action. We recognized the need for innovative solutions to tackle this global challenge and promote sustainable practices.
Learning Journey
Throughout the development of REPlasticReThink, we embarked on an enriching learning journey. We delved into the world of plastic recycling, exploring the complexities of different types of plastics, recycling processes, and the technology involved. Our team gained a comprehensive understanding of how machine learning and image processing could be harnessed to identify recyclable and non-recyclable plastics, which led us to create a user-friendly web-based solution.
Building the Project
To bring our vision to life, we combined our expertise in software development, machine learning, and web design. We utilized TensorFlow.js to integrate a trained model that can scan images and determine whether the depicted item is plastic or not. Our user-friendly interface allows users to upload images, observe the scanning process, and receive real-time results.
Challenges Faced
The journey to create REPlasticReThink was not without its challenges. Fine-tuning the machine learning model to accurately classify plastics presented complexities, and we iteratively refined our model to improve its performance. Ensuring seamless integration between the web interface, image processing, and the model required meticulous coordination and testing.
Additionally, as we aimed to make the solution accessible to as many users as possible, we encountered browser compatibility issues that required careful consideration and adaptation.
