Inspiration came from the theme of Dragonhacks 2019
Our project is a cardboard LED matrix Arcade Cabinet configured to play games such as Apple Catcher.
Main Project
There were two sides of this project. On the hardware side, we had to create a working LED board with 80 LED's, wires, cardboard, and lots of solder. We had an arduino to control the LED board and the joystick input. Additionally, we had a Dragonboard 410C to take the score from the game and send it to a database. This database would use firebase and post the high scores on a website.
Challenges we ran into
Issues with lighting up only the LED's we wanted. Issues with communication between the dragonboard and the arduinos. Latency between two arduinos
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Making a working LED board that can take input to light up individual LED's out of 80 with 18 pins. Figuring out how to manage input and output and commands with a Dragonboard 410C and 2 arduinos.
What we learned
How to communicate data efficiently between Dragonboard and arduino. How to set up a joystick to give input to a game that provides data to change an LED grid. How to light up specific LED's without lighting up extra ones.
What's Next for Retrocade
We have plans to add even more games to Retrocade! Pong is almost able to be added, and tetris and snake are currently in the works.
