🎶 Inspiration
Retro aesthetics are our favorite aesthetics. We wanted to make something which is very vintage in its feels, and something which has a potential in current user market as well. So, we came up with an idea to make a super themed up mixtape app. Just like old cassette players, our mixtape just transitioned into the online mode through tech, and dressed itself into the retro vibes ✨
📀 What it does
Our project lets the user create a beautiful mixtape of theirs, with YouTube links of their favorite songs. Once created, they can save it and receive the viewing link. We didn't put the feature to let users edit their mixtape for the sake of retro vibes, just as how one cassette once burned can't be edited into another song. The link then received can be used to view and listen to the mixtape. In the listening section, it is all themed up too, with different toggles to set the correct song and then listening to it.
📻 How we built it
- We used react to make our web app, and a lot of CSS to make it look how we wanted it too. For maintaining the data, which was essentially the mixtapes with songs in them was stored using firebase. We also used Firebase for hosting our web application, which is live at https://checkapppp.web.app/.
- For designing the project, we used FIgma
📼 Challenges we ran into
We faced few challenges in putting our imagination to work, since it was design heavy. We also faced few problems syncing the data on the frontend correctly, but were able to sort it out in the end.
💿 Theme Prize We're applying for
💽 Best Dressed Hack
Our hack lets users share their aesthetic sense of music, dressed in retro, which we feel gives enough confidence to us to apply for this theme prize. We crafted RetroTape keeping in mind the aesthetics first, and that's how we came along with the development over the 2 days and made it a reality!
🎧 Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're very proud of making such a retro dressed up app which is very cool to use ✨, that too in a short period of time.
🎛️ What we learned
We learned many things, such as extracting YouTube thumbnails from links, many new animations in CSS, integrating firebase with react since it's a lot different lately, and more!
🎤 What's next for RetroTape
We would love to make the experience more customized in the future, with different theme and decade options, for which we would also be adding authentication in RetroTape
