💡 Inspiration

As active travelers, we often look for fun places to visit, but we always make sure to check what others have to say. Being more visual, we believe that video reviews offer a more interactive experience, rather than relying on bland online written reviews. Imagine visiting the Eiffel Tower and being able to scan a QR code, which allows you to post a video on the spot attached to the location for others to enjoy? Or being able to watch short video reviews of a restaurant you'd like to eat at?

With the growing popularity of short videos, we introduce, RevYou, a platform that allows users to view and post short videos & reviews of a specific business or landmark with the scan of a QR code.

✍️ What it does

With RevYou, there are three options:

You can watch short videos and reviews of any landmark or business from anywhere on your smartphone.
After scanning a QR code on the spot of the business/landmark and verifying your location to make sure that video reviews are accurate, you would be allowed to post one yourself! Dive deep in your imagination and feel free to post something fun.
As a business or landmark, you can create your own customized QR code and place it wherever you find suitable for users to interact with while gaining more exposure.

⚙️ How we built it

We built RevYou as a responsive web application, allowing us to develop a better user experience. We first drew various UI samples by hand to get a better idea of what would look best. We then developed the app using React, TypeScript and ChakraUI.

For the backend, we used NodeJS, Fastify, FFMPEG and TypeScript.

🚧 Challenges we ran into

It was quite difficult to get the videos to work on both android and iOS devices, and it took us some time to figure out what the problem was. In addition, creating the login system takes a lot of time, so we had to do so quickly while also making it look nice and offer a great user experience. We also ran into quite a few roadblocks trying to find settings and functions we had never used before.

🏆 Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're definitely very proud to have turned this idea into a working prototype. Seeing an idea come to life is an incredible amount of joy. We're also proud of coming up with an idea that could be very useful for businesses, who are currently struggling during this pandemic and need all the help they can once things open up. We are truly blessed to have had the opportunity to work together with such talented, patient, and organized team members.

🧠 What we learned

We learned about how short video platforms such as TikTok work. We realized that it's more complicated than it seems. Some of us got introduced to new coding languages, others learned new UI design skills as well as simple organization and planning skills.

👟 What's next for RevYou

We'd like to continue developing our platform as both a social media and review app. We believe that it would help small businesses gain more exposure and have fun and entertaining videos associated with them, to give users a better idea of what it's like to be there. As pandemic restrictions ease, we hope to see more people travel and support small businesses, while interacting with our platform for every place they visit.
