Inspiration

We stayed at a very sketchy motel and we wanted to create an app that could show how safe an area was.

The user can select a point on the map and then creates a heat map uses tracts in the selected county.

We used arcGIS to create the map and render the heat maps.

Creating the polygons to represent the counties and tracts on the map was difficult.

We are proud that we were able to create the polygons.

We learned how to use the arcGIS sdk to create detailed maps.

Using more data and spending more time developing algorithms to generate the heat maps.

I set up the arcGIS map to get the users current location and to allow the user to tap the screen to select an area on the map. I also took the Crime Data database and created classes for easily grabbing the data.

I worked on retrieval and organization of data. Once we got the data I worked on developed on analyzing it to make it relevant. From there I helped create a database file and read it in to use the data on the app.

I gathered the crime data used in the application and helped organize it into a database. I also helped develop the algorithm that assessed the safeness of the county queried.

Joseph Grzelak
I connected our app to the census APIs that retrieve our location-based data. This involved porting a lot of the logic in the Census Bureau's citysdk (which is JavaScript) into Java because our app is a native Android app. I rendered this data on the map in colored polygons that overlayed each Census Tract forming a heat map.
