Inspiration
Google Maps already provides realtime traffic information, helping users drive safer and avoid congestion. Seeing as crime data is democratized by the Toronto Police Service's public data portal, there was an opportunity to blend these two in the familiar Maps UI.
What it does
Visualizes crime and Calls to Police Service data in Toronto.
How we built it
Google maps React Library + ExpressJS backend.
Challenges we ran into
Designing a robust and scalable data ingestion pipeline, designing a seamless user experience on top of using Google Maps.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Creating a location-sensitive User experience (i.e, Sidebar lists crime data depending on the user's clicks on the map).
What we learned
Spending the time to architect a project like this is super important, especially given the amount of dependencies, potential user interactions. Also learned that Google Maps is so widely customizable!
What's next for SafeInTheSix
Cleaning up the project repository, adding other data feeds, cleaning up user Interface.
