SafetyPin came out of our team’s passion for social justice and desire for public well-being. Living in the heart of Atlanta, we hear a lot about crime happening, yet students don’t consider those reports when making decisions. Anyone can and should SafetyPin: It is a useful tool to use while booking a hotel because many people tend to consider factors like cost and amenities before their own safety. People should travel and experience the world but not at the cost of anyone’s safety.
Coming from different majors, different levels of coding experience, and this being the first hackathon for each of us, taking on a website of this advancement was intimidating and arduous, particularly dealing with the immense amounts of data we got from the Atlanta Police Department and TomTom API. There were times at which we considered switching to different idea and saving this one for a later hackathon but with much dedication we were able to come up with a beautiful product. We are most proud of our user interface, especially being able to accurately color code the map icons according to crime frequency, contributing to the readability and accessibility of the website. In the future, we hope to expand SafetyPin to include even more points of interest aside from hotels and include more cities across the globe.
