Inspiration

Many people enjoy taking trips to the beach, especially in the summer. Sometimes, you get to the beach only to find out that it is closed, or the conditions were not what you thought they would be. Our team wanted to create an app that allows users to see the conditions of beaches. The goal is to make it easier to find suitable beaches for the users.

What it does

Beach finder is a mobile app that will help people to find the most safe and convenient beaches for their beach activities. The app contains a map of CA with the beach locations shown to the user. The user will select which beach they want to go to. Once the user selects a beach, a pop-up showing the beach name, temperature, and several factors will appear. The pop up will conclude with a beach score between 0 and 100. 0 meaning you should not go to the beach and 100 being you should go to the beach. The scores are based off of a scale that the team created. In addition, the user of the app has the option to submit a report for the beach they are at. They can report incidents, wildlife, or write beach reviews.

How we built it

We used ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Survey 123, Python, Android Studio, ArcGIS Maps SDK

Challenges we ran into

  • Trying to deploy the flask API
  • Establishing connection to data
  • Connecting feature layers to other aspects of the app

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of the app we were able to create, and the teamwork involved. We all played to our strengths and worked well together. We are also proud that the app is working and solves a real issue.

What we learned

  • How to gather webpage data or more specifically how to find desired values in the webpage’s html
  • Got more comfortable with python environments
  • Learned more about the app development process, specifically how developing an API makes it easier to implement a project as a mobile and web app
  • Teamwork
  • Things don’t always work out, have a backup
  • Every answer is on Google
  • How to work with maps development

What's next for Sand-tastic

  • Beach Finder can expand to show more beaches in California
  • Users can make accounts and save their favorite beaches
