The inspiration behind this idea is that skin cancer or cancer in general is still such a prevalent disease and testing can be expensive and tedious since all forms of testing are done in a hospital. This is an at home handheld test, therefore more accessible and more affordable than tests done in the hospital.
We built this device with an Arduino, jumper wires, subdermal needle probes, HC-05 Bluetooth module, a resistor, a 9V battery, MIT App Inventor, and ChatGPT
It detects skin cancer using electrical pulses and it runs a current through the positive and negative points. Takes the information and transmits the information through bluetooth to the app.
Some challenges we ran into with this project was when we first started using ChatGpt. It wouldn't work at all, however later when it did work it only worked with talk-to-text in the app. Another challenge was designing the website within 24 hours, making the website is one thing but making sure the aesthetics also matched with the project was hard as well.
We're proud of learning new skills, for example, using the MIT app maker, creating a longer-term project with room to improve in the future and lastly working with hardware, for most of us on the team it is our first time working with hardware.
We learned perseverance and that to keep working through your problems
The next step of SCD would be to integrate it with Terra API so that it pairs with Apple Health so that it can also tell the people using the app when to work out during the day depending on the UV levels
