Problem Addressed

Financial deficits has been the longest standing root cause behind a lack of access to opportunity in terms of education. Despite scholarships being available, students often feel intimidated by the fierce competition. Especially those who are approaching their undergraduate and postgraduate studies. This type of environment discourages these financially struggling students because they feel unprepared compared to their peers who have resources available to them and who have people readily guiding them through the process. As education does not come cheap, if these students are unable to receive a scholarship they will be forced to discontinue or drop out from school and there will be a great loss in opportunity.

Intended Audience

ScholastiCare was designed while keeping in mind students who come from low-income families with a competitive disadvantage in the scholarship application process. Scholasticare particularly targets students who are approaching their graduate and postgraduate studies in consideration of their cutthroat scholarship applications. The team also took into consideration students who excel in areas other than academic merit and so created the website to promote a wide variation of scholarship offerings.

How Solution Was Developed

The ScholastiCare team utilized the Design Thinking philosophy as the foundation for solution development. The problem and solution brainstorming was not linear at all in the case of this project and being a new team, it was definitely a challenge. The team went over various angles of tackling the problem and had an open discussion wherein everyone shared their thoughts about a particular issue they wanted to solve, and how they wanted to solve it. The team then came to a consensus on creating a scholarship database for low-income individuals and also developed additional features along the way. However, thinking in the mind of a potential user, the team was able to carefully consider their wants and needs.

Team & Their Roles

The ScholastiCare team is composed of four students from the Philippines, namely Elijah Carreon, Johanna Gambe, Arianne Gutierrez, and Jaron Pomer. Driven by their desire to innovate solutions for addressing global issues, all of them collaborated to conceptualize ScholastiCare. Johanna Gambe, the CEO, led the development, design, user interface, and wireframing of the website with the support of Jaron Pomer. Meanwhile, Arianne Gutierrez supervised the research and ideation of ScholastiCare with the support of Elijah Carreon. With their efforts combined, the dedicated team was able to bring ScholastiCare to life through Figma.
