Inspiration

Our inspiration for this project came from one of our grandparents who lives in a third-world country where factories distribute a lot of carbon pollution, causing a great deal of concern for the local community. In response, we were determined to find an efficient solution for reducing carbon emissions from factories.

What it does

Our project is divided into two parts. The first part is a slideshow that introduces our idea of building seaweed farms around factories that emit carbon. We also highlight other uses for seaweed that can address various problems. The second part of our project is an app prototype that allows companies to register their factories as an SeaGreen Solution. To become an SeaGreen Factory, a factory must have at least four seaweed farms around its premises. The app also features a marketplace for seaweed products and an overall focus on seaweed.

How we built it

We made the slideshow with google slides and we made the app prototype with Figma.

Challenges we ran into

Creating the slideshow using Google Slides and the app prototype using Figma presented some challenges for us. It was difficult to find resources on seaweed carbon absorption because it is not a widely discussed topic. Additionally, we had limited experience with Figma, and we had to watch lots of tutorials to become comfortable with it.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Despite the challenges, we are proud of our unique topic and working app prototype. Seaweed farming is an innovative concept that not many other students have explored. We put a lot of effort into creating the app prototype, and we are pleased with how it looks and operates.

What we learned

We learned about a very good way to reduce carbon emissions from the environment. We also learned that there is much more to seaweed than climate change that we realized from observing the UN's sustainability goals. It can help "No Poverty and zero hunger" goal because we can give seaweed food products to homeless shelters. "Good health and well being" goal because we can make cheap and affordable medicine through seaweed. "Affordable and clean energy" goal because of seaweed biofuel which is a non-renewable energy source and doesn’t harm the environment. "Life below water" goal because it reduces coastal erosion and also by using seaweed water bottles it can reduce the amount of plastic thrown into the ocean. Marine life can also eat the seaweed water bottles. "Life on land" goal because it reduces plastic thrown into landfills. So ultimately it can make progress through the UN's sustainability goals overall.

What's next for SeaGreen Solutions

Our hope is that SeaGreen Solutions will eventually support most factories in reducing carbon emissions, leading to a significant decrease in carbon pollution. In terms of developing the app, we plan to use an AI backend that can give further advice to factory farm owners on how to develop their farms. The AI backend can also help develop graphs and statistics that could help the factory owners understand if they're farm is performing at full employment. Furthermore, by contributing to the UN sustainability goals and any other organization's environmental science goals, SeaGreen Solutions can help create a more sustainable future for all.
