Inspiration
Github is a code hosting platform that excels on collaborating, storing, and tracking software projects. Because of its well-known benefits, our group wanted to create an app that does something similar, but different at the same time. Additionally, since most of our group came from Rutgers, we faced the problem our app aims to solve while trying to get to SBUhacks -- not being able to find a bathroom. Thus, Sh*tHub was born.
What it does
Sh*tHub utilizes the Google Maps API to allow for the custom marking toilets near you. Users can share their toilets added and other users can see them. Additionally, you can follow other people to find their restroom recommendations that will curate your restroom feed.
How we built it
Utilizing JavaScript, HTML, CSS and a handful of brainpower, Sh*tHub was created to be a solution to finding the closest toilets near you.
Challenges we ran into
We were complete beginners to coding so it was our first time using APIs and databases. As a result, we needed to learn a lot of what we needed within the last 36 hours. Additionally, managing who does what was initially an obstacle since most of us had beginner skillsets. In the end, we all agreed to learn something new and focus on a part to piece together.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud that we have a working app and a clean website because it is our first in-person hackathon and one of our team's first hackathon's ever.
What we learned
We learned how to piece together a front-end and back-end program that worked cohesively. It tested our communication skills and we ended up learning a lot on how to be clear with each other to get a project up and running.
What's next for Sh*tHub
We plan on implementing more community features such as making a leaderboard and points system to encourage growth and reputability. This app will also help promote better infrastructure in the future as the standards for bathrooms improve.
