The Problem

Growing up, we as girls always observed boys or men play sports, whether in the movies we watched, like high school musical, or just normal tv channels. The toys given to us were american girls dolls and dollhouses, while boys were given sports equipment and sports video games like Madden. As a result, from a young age, girls, often subconsciously learn to associate sports with the opposite gender, leading them to be less inclined to participate in sports throughout their life.

What We Did

We wanted to expose young girls to females in sports at an earlier age by creating a soccer game where girls can play in a match and manage their own team. We created a mobile soccer game meant to inspire young girls to get more involved in sports. Having real female soccer players as characters in the game will normalize the idea and allow girls to feel welcome into the sport. We hope the background info on each player that includes both their accomplishments and their challenges will further inspire young girls.

Tools We Used

The tools/skills that we used include Godot, XCode, Swift, and Adobe Photoshop. Each of us had different levels of knowledge with app and game development, so we worked on aspects of the app that we believed we had more skill in. Godot was a completely new software for all of us, and we are proud of all that we've learned and accomplished in the span of a week!

What's Next?

Our future plan is to expand our program and add more options, such as Hall of Fame (of players), live TV where the girls can watch games of women’s sports, and highlights of the players. This way girls will be more aware of women's soccer, thus garnering a larger fanbase! Also, we will focus more on fixing some of our in-game issues, such as connecting the playable characters to the game.
