Inspiration

We were inspired by many of the company's challenges but the ones that stuck out to us were Nokia, Bell, Architech, and CGI + TD. We love the idea of inspiring more females and nonbinary students to dive deeper into their curiosity about all things STEM. As four young women in STEM we took our experiences and created this app to empower and enlighten others while keeping it interactive and fun through crypto rewards.

What it does

SheSTEMS is a unique iOS application that can be used to explore different STEM topics, connect with mentors, and attend workshops and conferences. With each new connection made, workshop attended, or topic explored, sheSTEMS will grant users cryptocurrency. The users would then be able to link their Coinbase account and trade the cryptocurrency from/to their Coinbase wallet. Users also have the opportunity to connect with experienced mentors and have insightful conversations by choosing which mentor would be most beneficial to them.

How we built it

Our team was not familiar with the software we were using so there was lots of learning that had to be done throughout the process but nonetheless a rewarding experience. We decided to go ahead with an iOS application because it was something none of us had worked on before and thought this would be the perfect opportunity to learn and showcase our skills. We used SwiftUI with Xcode, mySQL, php, Coinbase API, Node.js and Angular. The database specifically proved to be quite challenging. We created the database and displayed it onto our application by using mySQL, and a php framework to an API to swift. The prototype was created using Figma.

Challenges we ran into

The software that we used was not familiar to us and so there were many errors we ran into, however with some help and research, we overcame these issues. The virtual element of the hackathon was definitely a challenging experience and caused a few hiccups but we worked together as a team to communicate and work on the elements together.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

This hackathon gave us a chance to explore new frameworks and learn new skills along the way while creating a solution encouraging females to delve into the STEM fields, without hesitation - to gain knowledge or mentorship opportunities. It also feels like a great accomplishment to be able to find a solution that integrates women empowerment and encourages women to be independent.

What's next for sheSTEMS

Complete the development of the database and expand to different cryptocurrency applications such as Binance to expand to a larger customer base, and to make sheSTEMS more compatible to a wider range of users. We would like to also conduct a few rounds of usability testing to gain user feedback on the feasibility, ease of use and overall design of the sheSTEMS app.
