Inspiration
While registering for classes, students often look through professor ratings and grade distributions to get the best possible experience during their future semesters. There are numerous great resources--however, they are scattered around and often difficult to consider all at once.
What it does
sk.edge takes these great resources and puts them in a single browser extension and integrates them into the school's registration site when you're browsing through your courses and sections (so far only UTD).
How we built it
We used the RateMyProfessor API along with the Nebula Labs API to acquire professor and grade data. Our frontend for the extension was made in Javascript and used Bootstrap, while the backend used Python to provide the RMP data.
Challenges we ran into
We ran into multiple challenges, especially with events within browser extensions, integrating numerous systems together, and DevOps when deploying our backend.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of creating an extension that we see our fellow students using for their registration.
What we learned
We learned how to develop browser extensions and improved our knowledge of Bootstrap and REST APIs.
What's next for sk.edge
We plan to expand our project to other universities to create a more streamlined registration experience. In the short term, we would like to increase the fetch speed and integrate more platforms.
